  • I’ve yet to see a pet owned by someone homeless who was cold, struggling or suffering. They were the happiest creatures that I knew. They spent all of their time with their best friend, had lots of time for play and love, and were always fed first and fed well.

I spent half of my 20s homeless and met plenty of homeless dogs and cats. Rats too. All of which could have run off at any point but never did. They were always warm, were protected fiercely by their owners and were STUPIDLY happy and well behaved. Super social and friendly.

You also gotta think about it from our perspective too. No one cares about us at all. We often have to fight for ourselves and are completely alone in it all. No one wants to love us and, often, we don’t love ourselves. A pet? Can literally make or break someone. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen someone lose their pet and become homeless and I’ve seen someone homeless gain a pet and become a totally different person and start thriving. Just because something cared about them back.

I also can’t think of any situation in which any of them would have chosen to keep their pet homeless if there was a guaranteed place for them to go where they’re happy and safe and loved. But there isn’t for most people. You said put them up for adoption but what if no one takes them? Now you’re both alone for no reason. What if they end up in a kill shelter somehow?

Things are not as black or white as they appear. More black and white. Like a gorgeous husky I knew named Rocky who was the happiest fuck that I EVER knew.
