How many people has Google convinced to kill themselves? That is the relevant question. Looking up the means to do the deed on Google is very different from being talked into doing it by an LLM that you believe you can trust.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who are some widely loved fictional characters that would be hated if they were real?English
4·2 hours agoTrue, he latches on to people he thinks are righteous, first Naomi and then Holden, and uses them as his moral compass. But when they are not around, he beats people up and kills then as his go to reaction to a threat and he has no remorse over doing it. As Naomi tells Holden about him, He is a monster. He doesn’t want to be a monster, but he is one.

Technology@beehaw.org•This Spiral-Obsessed AI 'Cult' Spreads Mystical Delusions Through ChatbotsEnglish
2·4 hours agoLet’s devote the full force of modern technology to create a tool that is designed to answer questions in a convincing way. The answer must seem like an accurate answer, but there is no requirement that it be accurate. The terminology and phrasing of the answer must support the questioner’s apparent position and the overall conversation must believably simulate an interaction with a friendly, or even caring individual.
Yeah, in a world of lonely people who are desperate for human contact and emotional support and are easily manipulated, this is in retrospect, an obvious recipe for disaster. It’s no wonder we’re seeing things like this and some people even developing a psychosis after extended interactions with chat-bots.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who are some widely loved fictional characters that would be hated if they were real?English
14·5 hours agoAmos Burton from The Expanse. Fans love him but he is a deeply damaged, disturbed, violent individual with no sense of right or wrong. At one point in the books, he looks at somebody and thinks he may have to kill them. The idea doesn’t bother him. He doesn’t get pleasure from it. But they’re in his way so he’ll do it.
If you think about it, it kind of has to be. If it wasn’t expanding, gravity would make it all fall together already.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you count on your fingers? How high can you count?English
2·3 days agoYou simply add one to each count. No fingers up equalt 1 (0+1). Only left pinky up equals 2 (1+2). Only left ring finger up is 3 (2+1). Left pinky and ring finger up equals 4 (3+1). Continue up to all fingers up equals 1024 (1023+1),

1·7 days agoAnyone who hires a consulting company powered by AI doesn’t need to. Clearly they are capable of making their own poor decisions and don’t need to go to an outside company to get bad advice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Lemmings who still don't want to use AI, why?English
1·8 days agoFirst, there’s no such thing as actual Artificial Intelligence. In it’s current usage, AI is simply a Large Language Model that takes the enormous amount of data it’s been fed and tries to generate a response that seems like it may be an answer to your question. It has no understanding of the question or the answer, it’s just an estimation of what might be an answer. The fact that there is no guarantee whatsoever that the answer you get is accurate is simply a modern example of the old adage, “Garbage in; garbage out.”
Secondly, there isn’t a single LLM made by a company that I would trust to guess my weight let alone the answer to a question I thought was important.

1·10 days agoAllow me to modify an old saying:
If you can’t say something nice about someone , without lying, then you shouldn’t say anything at all.
You can’t say anything nice about Dick Cheney without lying so just shut up.

They are a badly designed, dangerous tools and people who do not understand them, including children, are being strongly encouraged to use them. In no reasonable world should an LLM be allowed to engage in any sort of interaction on an emotionally charged topic with a child. Yet it is not only allowed, it is being encouraged through apps like Character.AI.
